As I recall my childhood, the enchanting tales of H. C. Andersen filled my days with wonder. Among his stories was Thumbelina, a tiny girl whose adventures sparked my imagination. I grew up in Denmark, where Thumbelinas water lilies bloom in every Gadekær, or pond, their delicate petals adorning the tranquil waters.
I remember gazing dreamily at those water lilies, imagining Thumbelina hanging from a silk ribbon, carried by a butterfly, dancing above the shimmering surface. The image was so vivid that it felt as though she was just a whisper away, sharing the beauty of the moment. As the seasons changed, so did my childhood.
Time passed, and I often wonder where Thumbelina, now Maja, might be now.Perhaps she has drifted with the wind to distant lands and embarked on new adventures far from our beloved ponds. Yet, the water lily remains, steadfast and radiant, a reminder of a time when magic seemed possible in every breeze. Its elegant form calls back to moments of joy and laughter, evoking memories that refuse to fade, even as I’ve grown older.
Each glance at those water lilies reminds me of the stories that shaped my youth, whispering secrets of possibility and imagination. They stand proudly, embodying the essence of dreams waiting to unfold. The lotus nymph of my childhood may have taken flight, but her spirit lingers on, nestled among the petals of those enchanting water lilies, inviting us all to dream once again. @SaatchiArt
