The Beauty of Transition

In the summer of 2011, Norway was struck by an unimaginable tragedy. On July 22nd, a bomb exploded in the government quarter in Oslo, killing eight people. Later that day, on the island of Utøya, sixty-nine young people lost their lives in a brutal attack. Like many others, I struggled to understand how such darkness could exist in a peaceful country.

As an artist, I turned to painting to process the grief. My first work was deeply traumatic to create, because every brushstroke carried sorrow, fear, and loss. Yet in the middle of this darkness, I remembered the words shared by the mayor after the attack — words about hope, unity, and humanity. I wanted to paint that feeling.

I began painting a dying rose. Day after day, I watched it slowly wither. But something unexpected happened. In the fading petals, in the fragile transformation, I discovered another kind of beauty. The rose was not only dying; it was telling a story about transition, dignity, and hope. From this realization, the painting The Beauty of the Transition was born.

The experience changed the way I look at life. Nature itself reflects this truth: autumn becomes most beautiful just before winter arrives, exploding in color before silence takes over. The same can be said of people and the things created with love and devotion. Time does not only destroy — sometimes it deepens beauty.

Through this painting, I want to remind us to see the beauty not only in beginnings, but also in a life fully lived.
