Prayer's Room

A summer visit to the Alhambra revealed a stunning prayer room, a silent witness to the era when Muslim culture flourished in Spain. The intricate calligraphy carved into the walls caught my eye and stayed with me long after I left. I took several photos of this beautiful space, but one small section of the script inspired me to create a painting. This piece of art carries the weight of history and craftsmanship, a tangible connection to a distant past.

The Story Behind the Painting
When preparing for an exhibition years later, I wanted to include this painting. But I needed to understand the meaning of the text. I sent a photo of the painting to all the Imams in Oslo and to various embassies, hoping for an answer. No one replied. Finally, I reached out to the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs. The response came quickly and was unexpected.
The letter explained that the text on the painting meant “God’s curse” and likely continued with “...upon the unbelievers.” This revelation shocked me. I had never imagined that the beautiful script could carry such a harsh message. The painting was put away, but the thoughts it stirred remained.
Finding a New Meaning
Years later, I shared this story with my boss of 20 years. He once told me that Christianity is unique in practicing grace. Curious if I could transform the painting’s message, I asked if he knew anyone who could write Hebrew. He did, and that person wrote “God is Merciful” in Hebrew. I painted this phrase over the original calligraphy, covering the curse with a message of grace.
This new layer gave the painting a fresh life and meaning. It became a symbol of hope and transformation, a reminder that art can evolve and carry different messages depending on the viewer’s perspective.
Reflections on History and Art
This experience taught me how important it is to understand the context behind symbols and words, especially in art. What looks beautiful may have a complex or even troubling meaning. It also showed me how grace and mercy can be powerful themes to bring forward, even when history tells a different story.
The prayer room in Alhambra remains a place of awe and mystery. Its walls hold stories of faith, conflict, and culture. My painting now carries a personal story of discovery, humility, and hope.
If you ever visit the Alhambra, take a moment to look closely at the details. Behind every beautiful design, there may be a story waiting to be uncovered.
